Gospel of Thomas · The Full Story of the Gospel With No Story · 3 Hour Sleep Story

A gospel with no birth, no miracles, no cross and no tomb. A hundred and fourteen sayings, one after another, each beginning Jesus said, and nothing between them. Tonight the Gospel of Thomas, walked through room by room the way you would walk through a house you had only ever seen the front of: the farm, where the sayings are about seeds and fields and fish; the strange room at the back, where the inside is made like the outside and the two become one; the room with the window, where the sayings are about a lamp and a light; the ones only Thomas has, the lion, the assassin practising on a wall, the woman whose jar ran empty on the road home; and the hard sayings, given once, plainly, and set down. Then the story of the book found twice: a rubbish heap outside a Greek speaking town in Egypt where scraps of these same sayings came out of the sand fifty years before the jar, and nobody knew what they were. And two more books whose names you may know, Philip with his bridal chamber and the companion line with the hole in the papyrus, and Mary, pointed at and left for the ninth night. A three hour sleep story, the eighth night of Season Six, The Lost Books.

A sayings gospel without a continuous account of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. A hundred and fourteen sayings, including dialogue and brief settings. Then the story of the book found twice: a rubbish heap outside a Greek speaking town in Egypt where scraps of these same sayings came out of the sand fifty years before the jar, and were later matched to the Coptic collection. And two more books whose names you may know, Philip with his bridal chamber and the companion line with the hole in the papyrus, and Mary, pointed at and left for the ninth night. A three hour sleep story, the eighth night of Season Six, The Lost Books. Framed by an imagined museum visit in Cairo and an imagined Ethiopian copyist in his round highland church. Retold from the surviving texts in paraphrase, with brief attributed quotations. The episode reports the collection without claiming to establish which sayings go back to Jesus. An authentic book is not the same as a true event.
