The season turns over tonight. For six nights you have heard the same story told by people who believed heaven was above: the sons of heaven came down, they taught, they were judged. Tonight a book from the Nag Hammadi collection that gives a strikingly different account of creation. The Secret Book of John, in which the one who made the world is not the highest thing there is, and does not know it, and the ones who came down to the daughters of men were not rebels against him but his own servants, sent to do exactly what they did. The same descent, the same metals, the same daughters, told from below. A man walking out of the Temple with a question, and a figure on a mountain that is a father and a mother and a son. The one at the top who cannot be named, and the powers below him, and the lower maker who does not know what lies above. The thought that acted alone. The seven with the faces of animals. A man made by a committee of angels, one for each limb, lying on the ground unable to move until they were tricked into giving him the only thing worth having. The tree, the eagle, and the flood, all seen from the other side. Then two more books from the same jar: what Adam told Seth at the end of his life, and the ruler who called himself god of the blind, and Norea, the daughter whom Noah refused entry to the ark and who burned it. And the name of the maker, said once, slowly, at the moment the book gives it, and then never again. A three hour sleep story, the seventh night of Season Six, The Lost Books. Framed by an imagined museum visit in Cairo and an imagined Ethiopian copyist at work at his desk. Retold from the surviving texts in paraphrase, with brief attributed quotations. Every claim about the codices, the museum and the readers was checked. An authentic book is not the same as a true event.
